Cellular Phone Reclamation & Resale

Three quarters of a million old mobiles will have been discarded or dumped since Christmas this year, according to a recent survey.

It is estimated 15 million mobile phones are replaced annually, with owners updating them on average every 18 months. It is thought about 3.75 million mobile handsets will have landed in Christmas stockings in 2008, according to NOP, a figure which is likely to grow this year.

In a recent survey undertaken by Paper Mountain Shredding & Recycling Services it was discovered that only 4 percent of those upgrading their phones deposited the old phone into a recycle project, furthermore a staggering 88% did not know how harmful it was to throw away their mobile for eventual arrival at landfill.

"Mobile phones contain toxic substances such as Lead solder, palladium, Berilium and Cadnium to name but a few, these substances when disposed of in a landfill site can find their way into the water supply, creating threats to human health and the environment, this can cause terrible illness such as Cancer and Spina Bifida," said Communications Development manager for ICC comms Europe Mr Darrel Watts.

For this reason the WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) has been in power since 2005 and as such imposes restrictions on the disposal of all electrical equipment including mobile cellular phones and associated equipment.

This means it is no longer an option to simply throw it away, by doing so you are in contravention of the WEEE directive and as such you are then open to corporate prosecution, removal of business trading licences or even imprisonment.

Even if your usual refuge collection have not mentioned this, they may be unaware of the WEEE directive, but taking your cellular products for disposal in landfill means they are breaking the law and as such the responsibility of "Duty Of Care" lies with you, not them.
